WAUBEN - Phillip "Phil" Brent Wauben, 75, of Byron Center, Michigan, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017. The Lord whispered "ready" and Phil answered "pull" after a courageous battle with cancer.

Phil was born to Matt and Rachael Wauben on January 9, 1942 in Cridersville, OH. He graduated from Cridersville High School in 1960 and served in the US Marines from 1960 to 1962. In 1970, Phil moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan with his three red-headed boys and a quarter in his pocket and started Grand Rapids Valve and Fitting. He owned and operated the successful business for 31 years, retiring in 2001.

Phil and Sue enjoyed traveling the US in their motorhome. Phil was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting and fishing, but his real passion was trap shooting. Phil was a proud and dedicated member at South Kent Sportsman’s Club, serving as both Vice President and President. He loved to competition shoot and traveled the ATA circuit for many years. In 1990, Phil won the Michigan State Shoot Handicap Championship. When not shooting, Phil enjoyed the Packers and the Cubs, which the Wauben boys hold dear to their hearts! Phil also could often be found cheering on the grandkids at one of their events. He loved to cook, too, trying new recipes and cooking the game from his hunts. He even cleaned up after himself! Phil also played "go fetch" for anything Cherokee needed from the store.

He is survived by his wife, Sue "Cherokee" Wauben; sons, Tim Wauben, Tom (Amy) Wauben, and Ty Wauben; step-son, Scott (Phyllis) DeVos; five grandchildren, Matt, Gracie, and Alex Wauben, Tyler and Baylee DeVos. Preceding Phil in death are his parents, Matt and Rachael Wauben, and the mother of his three sons, Mim Wauben.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held 11 AM Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church, 2350 44th St. SW, Wyoming, MI. His family will greet friends Tuesday from 10-11 AM at the church. In keeping with Phil's wishes, cremation has taken place.  Please feel free to wear your shooting vest - Phil would love it!

His family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at www.cookcares.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Phil may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Friedreich’s Ataxia, or South Kent Sportsman’s Club.
